Girls Hostel, Tabora, Tanzania
The town of Tabora in Tanzania witnessed a first as 28 secondary school girls moved into a new Girls Hostel accommodation sponsored fully by AMARA Aid in Northern Ireland at a cost of £5,000. It is clear that we have identified a need here, one which enables us to serve the community and minister to the girls in a Christian environment.
The Diocese of Tabora had some unused buildings requiring renovation and these were deemed suitable for refurbishment as a girls’ hostel. The plan was not only to provide accommodation for these young girls coming into the town from outlying villages to attend schools and colleges but a safe
Christian environment for them to continue their education. As the families of these girls pay a small fee for their acceptance into the facility the project is now self sufficient.
The accommodation building was renovated and a fence with gates was constructed to improve security. A new toilet and bathroom block along with the outdoor kitchen facilities and a further suite of rooms including the matron’s accommodation were also added. Water access was improved by installing a 1,000 litre storage tank.
Mary Sabaya is the hostel matron and, along with her husband, makes a perfect house parent team. For them it is a ministry rather than a job, and they see it as a great opportunity to provide a home-environment for these young people.
